LITANY CALL ON ME

Yorkshire duo Jake Nicolaides and Beth Cornell first met while in high school in Harrogate, so it’s appropriate that their new song ‘Call On Me’ transports us back to those liberating teenage years, where our first doses of freedom came with parents paying for our phone contracts, no more bedtimes, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, and the lack of seriousness of it all. As Litany explain: "'Call On Me' is about that first taste of freedom you get as an teenager. When you would call round on your friends and stay up all night playing video games. There's always that boy or girl next door and everything just feels so visceral and exciting. It's a song about first times and first love." Speaking of visceral, the instrumentation of ‘Call On Me’ has all the exposed nerve endings of a teenage romantic: R&B melodies, beefy synths, playful ‘90s textures that replicate the imagery of VHS tapes and Street Fighter. Nicolaides' bold production is complemented by Cornell’s expressive voice; breathless words transcending into soulful lifts as her emotion is unleashed into the song. ‘Call On Me’ is a brilliant follow-up to last year’s 4 Track EP, and we’re as eager as an hormonally imbalanced teen to hear what else Litany will deliver in 2018. - Hannah Thacker
